Altiris Patch Management and Microsoft Automatic Updates
I recently had someone ask the following after watching this Patch Management Video:
I have my environment ready to go I believe. But I'm wondering about the current Automatic Updates that they currently have. Does PM turn off the native MS auto updates that come down?
Altiris Patch Management does not turn off the Microsoft Automatic Updates. Both can run at the same time and whichever schedule is more agressive is the one that will patch first. If you want to turn this off, then you can use Group Policy to change this setting. You can also change the registry manually using a package through software delivery.
The key that will need modified is:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
For the various settings whether you are using Active Directory or not refer to Microsofts KB entitled "How to configure automatic updates by using Group Policy or registry settings".

Automatic push through Altiris
Along the same lines as your post, I had a user inquire if we could set Altiris to automatically stage and deploy patches to our desktops (not servers!), mirroring what windows update would be doing anyway. I don't know if that's possible, or even advisable! Is there an option to do such a thing in Altiris?
Thanks,
Kevin
WSUS updates
The short answer is not yet. This spring and managefusion there was talk about getting all the updates that Microsoft has available on WSUS into patch management. I don't know if that will happen or not. Altiris does not usually have the non-security patches available through patch management. You can request one, but they don't always do it.
