Running Notification Server's LogViewer.exe Locally

Running Notification Server's LogViewer.exe Locally

Here's a tip that probably won't get you a raise but it will make troubleshooting Altiris Agent issues or peeking at NS log files a tad bit easier.

(We'll work on the raise in another tip.)

Copy the following files from the (install drive)\program files\altiris\Diagnostics folder on your Notification server to a local folder on your computer:

Altiris.Diagnostics.dll
LogViewer.exe
SourceGrid2.dll
SourceLibrary.dll

Then create a shortcut to LogViewer.exe on your desktop or wherever you would like it.

Now you can run the logviewer locally to diagnose issues with your Altiris Agent or to review log files on your Notification server.

Remote log feed

The remote log feed function is also pretty cool too.

You will need to start the feed from your NS with various options and then you can connect to the feed from your workstation and monitor the log files that way as well.

Remote log feed

So, I started the remote log feed on the NS and then setup a Remote Feed on my desktop. Do I need to leave the logviewer open on the NS server? Can I logout?

Any other detailed tips and tricks would be helpful.

Quick tips...

You definitely need to be logged in unless you start the remote feed as a service.

The log viewer doesn't need ot be open, just the feed for it does.

Excellent

That is great. Now if only I could fix the problem where my log files don't get erased every time the deployment agent crashes....
