At Last! Custom Inventory for Macintosh!
For years, we thought that the Macintosh platform did not allow for custom inventory. Finally, a solution has been found.
Using a combination of Inventory Solution for Macintosh, Software Delivery for Macintosh and a couple of shell scripts, we can now do custom inventory on a Mac.
Shell Script to Manage the Unix and Macintosh Client.conf 'debug_level' Value
Quite often, it is necessary to modify certain values in the agent's client.conf file on Unix, Linux or Macintosh clients when troubleshooting issues. Among those values is the debug_level. The attached shell scripts can be used to facilitate this process in place of using an editor to make this modification to a client.conf file.
Shell Script to Direct a Unix, Linux or Macintosh Client to a New NS Server
It's really not that difficult to direct a Unix, Linux or Macintosh client to a different NS server. Simply change the 'Server-1' value in the client.conf, restart the agent and voila! The following shell script will even do it all for you!
Shell Script to Manage the Unix and Macintosh client.conf hold_queue Value
Do you hate (or don't know how to use) the Unix and Mac vi editor but need to troubleshoot a Unix or Mac client running the Altiris Agent?
Here are a few tips (and a script) to get you on your way.
Scripting Changes to Microsoft Entourage
We upgraded to Exchange 2007 last weekend. In doing so, we started using a new server name and dns name. Outlook automatically notices the change and will update accordingly, Entourage... not so much. I learned quite a few things about scripting Entourage in preparing for this, so along with the code, I'll also explain why it is written the way it is.
Installing the DS and NS Agent for Macintosh
Macintosh information for Altiris is a little sparse and I've often been left in the cold with questions. Hopefully this article will help guide those who are trying to get Macs to show up in the Deployment Console.
Getting a Mac into the DS allows you to have control over the machines, copy files to them, and see their inventory.

Altiris Client for Mac and Apple Remote Desktop
I did a search for "Macintosh" on the Juice site the other day and came up with 4 results... Hopefully this article will be of interest to at least a few people.
The latest release of the Deployment Console supports Macintosh clients but in its current state it is no match for Apple Remote Desktop. I just wanted to share a couple scripts that I use from ARD to make the most out of the Altiris Client for Mac.
