Auditing
Check for Installed Applications - VB Script
Application installation can become tricky at times. We have noticed problems with installing software and our Spy Sweeper blocking the installation. We then had a need to determine if the Spy Sweeper is installed and do some action if it is.
Altiris and Intel vPro Use Cases, Part 4: Auditing and Software Remediation
NOTE: If you have not read parts 1 through 3, please read these before reading this part as this is a continuation of the story begun in the previous sections.
Security is only as tight as the weakest link in your environment. More often than not it's internally where the security holes are created, either inadvertently from carelessness or intentionally from a disgruntled or disillusioned employee. The hardware and software security can be top of the line, but if the human factor doesn't adhere to policy, it may not make any difference. This part follows the IT team for Mighty Modern Marketing as they try to track down a security hole where productivity is taken down through the very tools used to defend and manage the network.
Require a Managed Object
In some environments, or for some ticket types, there always needs to be an Asset. After all it doesn't make much sense to have an install software request without a computer seleted. For those options you can create a validation rule that will require this option.
Enable MSI Installer Logging
I just learned that you can enable MSI logging so that if your installer fails with an error you can see where the MSI failed.
Caputuring Application Serial Numbers with Altiris Inventory Solution for Windows
I'm always surprised to find how few customers take advantage of Altiris Inventory Solution's ability to inventory an application's installed serial number. This information can be invaluable when trying to tie copies of applications installed in your environment back to software license agreements.

In Search of CPUs and Cores
Who among you has ever looked at the CPU information that the Altiris hardware inventory gathers and said "That's not what I need. I need to know how many physical CPUs are there, or how many cores there are, or whether this is a hyper threading CPU, etc."

Capturing Security Information with Inventory Solution
Working in the Banking and Finance industry we get constant audits of our server fleet. To help assess the security config, we wrote a custom inventory job designed to capture local security policies.
Hopefully it'll take some of the pain out of examining your company's policies.
Duplication of Data... AKA Bad juju.
Over the past several (agonizing) weeks (not because I was working with Altiris but because this problem is bigger than life itself, it seemed like, but I digress) I have been working with Altiris support on a number of issues that has arisen within our infrastructure surrounding the duplication of data for various resources.
This book is my (feeble) attempt as describing these scenarios and how they may be resolved.
Data Duplication: How to Find it and How to Fix It
Over the past several weeks I have been working with Altiris support on a number of issues that has arisen within our infrastructure surrounding the duplication of data for various resources.
There has been a consistent issue with duplication of data across the Altiris infrastructure which can cause a number of issues in relation to data resolution within Altiris especially when reporting against this data.

Audit Integration Component - SecurityExpressions
NOW HEAR THIS! SecurityExpressions functionality is now in the Notification server. The release of the Audit Integration Component allows your organization to leverage SecurityExpressions auditing for compliance and configuration drift through your NS. You can download the Audit Integration in the Solution center in the NS. This solution will also install Task Server for you (which is free) and will give you pre-canned tasks for auditing. Very cool.
