How often do you update the firmware and BIOS of your Dell servers? If you are like many administrators, you rarely attempt it. Why? There are many reasons, including "It takes a long time," "There are no incompatibility or performance issues that require it," "Why risk running processes in a production OS if they aren't absolutely necessary," and so on.

I recently worked on a project at a large public university with approximately 15,000 students. The computers are a mix of desktops and laptops, with a mix of Windows XP and Windows Vista installed. The university had no previous experience with Altiris products and looked at Dell Client Manager as a great way to solve several business problems and also get an introduction to Altiris.

The purpose of this document is to explain the proper procedures for extracting .HDR files from non-packaged Dell BIOS Update Packages for use with any version of the Dell Client Manager (DCM). This is used in conjunction with updating the BIOS of Dell client models through policy based distribution with DCM and/or stand-alone package distribution through conventional methods.

Q:
The number of systems supported by the latest version of Dell Client Manager is extremely limited. I noticed when using the OpenManage console that the list of supported model types is only about 43.

Q:
Can the Dell Client Manager 1.0 be used to configure BIOS setup passwords? I can get it to configure settings in the BIOS but can't figure out how to set the BIOS Setup password to prevent users from changing the BIOS Settings.
