Securing the Notification Server Console

Securing the Notification Server Console

Have you ever been asked by someone for access to a report or set of reports and spent ages in the Notification Server trying to figure out how security works and how to set it up? Usually the answer has been to give that user administrative rights rather than spend time trying to figure out how to give them permission to see just one folder or a set of folders. Either that or create a report and simply email it to them. Security within the Notification Server can get quite confusing when you start getting into roles, privileges, permissions and inheritance. I for one have been spending a lot of time trying to figure it out and have tried to make the topic of securing the NS as easy as possible.

Creating an Executive Dashboard within the Altiris Console

Creating an Executive Dashboard within the Altiris Console

The Altiris 6.5 console provides a number of reports and dashboards that give us good high level information about what's happening within Altiris but the problem with this is that all the information is found in a number of different places. What I get asked continually is where can I go to see all the high level information that I need to see? Management or Executives may not have permission to see all the reports within the console or they may not want to have to browse for different summary information. This guide will help you build what is called an executive dashboard which is one page that provides people such as executives or managers all the information they need at the right level of detail and nothing else. See the image below for what the finished dashboard will look like.

Run Remote Logging as a Service

Run Remote Logging as a Service

Ever want to monitor the Notification Server from your Workstation, without having a user logged in on the server?

Currently Altiris Log Viewer requires some user logged into the server, running the log in remote mode and then lock it in that state in order to remotely view the log file. Well if you don't like leaving users logged in on your server like me (even in locked mode), then this doesn't work for you.

(To see how to run Altiris Log Viewer on a separate Machine see KB article #20453)

Helpdesk Solution has a wonderful array of options to help cut back on some of the grief that your helpdesk staff might have. I've quickly learned that one of the fastest ways to get buy-in for a new product is by maximizing ease of use. Tasks are a great way to improve ease of use for your Helpdesk workers, especially when you are using new solutions.

In this article I'll show you how to access console resources for Local Security Solution by creating a new Helpdesk Solution task. With some additional research, some of these techniques can be used to generate tasks for other Altiris products.

HP + Altiris + BIOS = Easy

HP + Altiris + BIOS = Easy

At the univeristy IT department where I worked, we wanted to secure our computers against hackers. We realized that someone could take a CD, USB drive, or external hard drive and boot to it. Then, they could hack our systems and seal our data. Here's how we solved the problem.
