Who else is going totally SVS?

Tom says: I have a question for everyone. How many of you are actually going COMPLETELY SVS layered through your environment, enterprise-wide? We are and have hit a few road-blocks; I am just curious who else is going ALL SVS ALL OUT. I think SVS is a great product that can only get better and will make my life much easier as our Deployment Specialist on staff.

As we mentioned in this recent comment, most customers deploying SVS now are doing so to address particular pain points. But some are using it as their standard deployment method for all supported software. One of those is Cal State San Marcos, which we've already written up as a success story. A couple more will be written up soon. Next year, especially with Vista rollouts starting, we expect to see more customers adopting SVS as their standard.
But let's open this one up to the readers -- who else has bought into the vision and is virtualizing everything?
And Tom, I hope you are working with Altiris services and/or with an Altiris partner to work through the issue you encounter!

Going all the way with SVS
Tom,
I'm now working with a customer to go all the way with SVS. The customer has 31 Apps, and they cannot work together. To face this problem, I did some testing, and the customer was very satisfied.
The new portable computers are now going SVS all the way, and this solves a lot of issues.
Just go for it, and face it. You will be surprised. Get in touch with an Altiris partner, so you will be sure to get it done right.

Hey, I work for a Company based in Belgium.
If SVS is "well" known between engineers, as a Partner we wanted to do more & we have decided to switch our training environment to SVS. It should be totaly up & running in January 2007.
As everything was prepared with Wise & deployed via a DS. Altiris was already our tool.
Now it's THE tool.

Yes, we are using an Altiris Partner to help us with our conversion BUT a lot of our education has been self learned on Packaging with SVS.
I like SVS. It provides a Great Delivery and Software Managment system.
We are deploying with DS and we are also building some software with Wise.
We purchased the Total Lifecycle Management Suite and it has been working out pretty good for us.

Thanks for the offer Erik. I think we are almost there. We are actually on the brink of an XP rollout.
We are currently on Windows 2000 SP4 and are using this as a time to put all our apps both off the shelf and internal apps.
This is a monumental undertaking but we are doing pretty well! I might be in touch if I have questions!
How many apps per machine?
Just wondering what the environment looks like out in the actual user world. I know enterprises with hundreds of applications but they don't of course go on all machines. So I am interested in knowing what the expected maximum and average number of layers are for those who are deploying all-SVS environments?

Hi Brent,
Well here at the Taxation we have the Base OS plus our Core Apps as listed below.
1. MS Office 2003 with Slip streamed SP
2. Lotus Notes
3. Bluezone Terminal Emulator
4. Adobe Acrobat Reader 7
5. Active Perl
6. Flash Player
7. Google Toolbar
8. Java Runtime Environment
9. MSI Cleanup Utility
10. Shockwave Player
11. Visio Viewer
12. and 2 other small apps
Now if the user has User Specific Apps on top of this it would add more, but I have Virtualized Full Verison Apps from Adobe / Macromedia, Microsoft and may others so realistically I think the average user could have anywhere from 10 to 15 apps on thier pc in a layered state. I have seen as many as 20 to 30 in our environment.

I was wondering how Office 2007 was to Layer?
We have had some issues with Office 2003 in a layer. Also we had some issues with Adobe Acrobat's Printer Driver function. I am glad to see others are taking the plunge into the new software.
Can you post anything on the Office 2007 Layering.......

Layering Office 2007
Office 2007 is a great app to put in a layer. You only have to remove the shortcut bar from the installation.
You can run over 100 layers without a problem. On the Juice there is an application placed that can help you by using the extensions to activate the layer.
Booting with no default layers is fast and relyable.
After that you only have to choose how to activate. Again the extension activation is great for this. The user won't notice.
