SVS on Vista Server or 64-bit Windows?
Juicemaster's picture

Q:
Roie asked, "Have you guys tested a version of SVS on either Vista or 64-bit Windows or both? I just set up a prototype Athlon 64 with the latest beta version of Vista 64, and would love to try out SVS on that. I am also working with a Windows Professional 64 on the same machine."

A:
Hi Roie. Support for servers, Vista, and 64-bit Windows are all slated for the next major SVS release, Lightning, which will be part of the Altiris 7/Polaris launch early next year.

It's running well on a Windows 2003

Hi, I'm running SVS in a Windows 2003 that I use as workstation and it's running very well. Maybe Windows 2003 is not officially supported but so far it’s working great.

SVS 2.0 is supported on Windows 2003

2003 is an officially supported platform, when used as a client.

Vista 64 bit support - When?

In your answer above you said "Vista, and 64-bit Windows are all slated for the next major SVS release, Lightning" that was mid 2006 we are almost into 2008 but SVS Client 2.1 HF2 Personal only supports vista 32bit. When can we expect support for vista 64bit

SVS and Vista 64

Scott Jones's picture

That's an old post, as you say. Vista 32 support shipped with 2.1 this June ('07). Vista 64 is still targeted for Lightning, but that release (as well as Altiris 7) have slipped. Lightning is now looking like a 2009 product.

Some 64bit support sooner

Some 64bit support sooner then 2009/2010 would obviously be beneficial.

Even if Juice could work in a 64bit environment for ONLY 32bit tasks, it would be a major benefit.

Most people want to run 32bit apps on a 64bit OS to get around the memory limitations (3Gig) of the older 32bit Operating Systems.

64 bit support

Hello,

Brilliant application, but useless to me now that it does't run on 64 bit OS. Any clue as to when it will?

Thanks

64 bit version

I have a 64bit version up and running on a Vista and XP 64 bit version.

We are still working on bringing this in production.

64 bit version

Erikw,
If you already have a 64-bit windows version up and running, is there any estimate on a release date that it may become publicly available?

64 bit version available

erikw's picture

It is our planning to release it in Las Vegas, but we have a legal way to go also.
So we do our best, but can not give garanties.
I use the 64 bit version on my portable, and i'm quit satisfied. The biggest problem is to determine that some layers are actually 64 bit layers, and therefore cannot be used on 32 bit platforms.
32 bit software from 32 bit platforms runs fine in it.

thanks

Thanks for the update, look forward to checking it out come hopefully April then

64 Bit support

erikw's picture

When i have approval to do so, i will make a trial version for 64 bit support. That can give some of you the possibility to try it.

64 bit support as we now have it is a newly build fslx.sys, and as you probably know it is not legal to distribute without approval.

I eagerly await... :)

Can't Wait

We are moving our entire company over to SVS starting in the next couple weeks. All of our engineers currently run on a 64 bit platform. We can't wait to get a fully released 64 bit svs client to eliminate a separate build process for those machines. If you need Beta testers please let us know.

Sooner the better

I just registered after viewing the posts and help on this site for the past 6 months. Only to say "Me Too" on this topic. Packaging and maintaining our applications are 1000 times easier with Altiris, and 280 of our engineers will be moving over to WindowsXP 64bit over the next 2 months. If only a version existed that I could put on those workstations :) I / We eagarly wait :)

SVS 64 bit

erikw's picture

SVS 64 bit will not be launched in April. The applikation is ready, but needs to compley with legal issues. We worked hard with Altiris to get this done, but sometimes things don not go as soon as we wish.
I will look if i cann be able to bring it as a beta version, so that some people can test it

Just curious if there was any progress on this thread. I love SVS too much to have to not use it on all the XP 64bit machines that we are moving everyone too :(

TSE/Citrix support

Hi Scott

Will the SVS-version with Vista 64 support also include support for TSE/Citrix environments?

TS support

erikw's picture

Thomas, TS/Citrix support is already there for over two years.
And very enhanced with profile exclusions, centralised management, and a very tight integration into the kernel.

TS and Citrix

I am hoping that Scott Jones could clarify this... We were told that Citrix was not supported due to issues with profile handling and such. The new version in Q1 09 was the rumor to be the one to address that...

If somebody should know

erikw's picture

If somebody should know that we have TS support for over two Years then it should be Scott. I talked several times with him in person (and we live for about 10.000km away from each other)and i demonstrated it to him.
If you wish to know more, please let me know, and i help you.

TSE/Citrix support

Erik, I am well aware that there are several 3rd party solutions available for SVS in a multi-user environment.

Altiris (Symantec) has stated for quite some time that Lightning would contain integrated support for TSE/Citrix. Our clients would prefer an integrated solution.

Given that Scott revealed a date for support for x64-bit Vista, I had hoped to get a confirmation regarding this subject as well, but apparently we will have to wait another month.

regards
Thomas

For about 2 years

erikw's picture

thomas, i builded and sell a TS and Citrix version, because lightning was announced in 2006. That another month is already two years.
And DVS4SBc is not just a add/on. It is also a very enhanced management module, that enables you to even run non CTX compliant software on CTX.
Nice and Easy.
The new management module we have for it makes it even more beautifull.
I have for over 10 years experience in the Citrx world, and i did implementations of Citrix, and the real hard ones, in the whole world. I traveled for more then 3 years just to support technicians to implement CTX in their environments.
SVS is one of the cvoolest products i ever saw and that is why i used it, rebuild it, and enhanced it.
I have a windows 2008 64bit environemnt running at home with Xenapp, and it is fast, very cool, and one of the best i ever designed, builded and played with.

Until it's officially

Jordan's picture

Until it's officially announced I wouldn't hold much too the time frame Scott gave for 64-bit.

RE: If somebody should know

Erik,

thanks for your offer of help, but I didn't realize that you were talking about your own add-on/custom code for this support. Respectfully, we are looking for native support of the Citrix environment with the SVS Pro product offering.

I am hoping to hear good news coming out of Manage Fusion Orlando on this subject.

Todd

You're correct, we don't

Jordan's picture

You're correct, we don't support citirx right now and that's one of the reasons why. As for the next release, and the possible time frame for it, I think there will be a lot of info about it next month at managed fusion that should answer people questions.
