Here's a tool that puts a little extra squeeze on your VSAs. It actually creates an archive file (.vsa) for a specified layer that is potentially smaller than one created through a normal SVS export.
Use cases:
- If you have a layer containing files in the USER_TEMPLATE, a copy of all these files will be contained in the User Specific section of the writable sub-layer for each user. Even resetting before export the layer leaves an extra copy of these files in the writable sub-layer for the currently logged in user. This tool exports the layer with a blank writable-sub layer containing none of the files from the USER_TEMPLATE. Of course, if the layer does not have anything in the USER_TEMPLATE the archive created by this tool will not be much smaller than one created by an SVS export.
- This tool exports the layer with a blank writable sub-layer but leaves the writable sub-layer intact on the source. This gives the user the ability to export and share a layer without either resetting or distributing their own personal settings.
Syntax:
SmallerVSA.exe "Layer Name" "Archive Path"
Layer Name - Valid layer name for existing SVS layer.
Archive Path - The complete path to the archive file including the .vsa extension.
Example:
SmallerVSA.exe "Sample Layer" "C:\VSA\Sample Layer.vsa"

Activate Layer
Hi,
Activate Layer cannot be exported!
We can have a message, if a Layer is activated?
Frank
Layer needs to be deactivated
Just like SVSAdmin and SVScmd, the layer needs to be deactivated before exporting. I didn't test the scenerio of trying to run this while the layer is active. It should have been obvious to me but I missed it. The error returned if the layer is active is incorrect. I will handle this situation better in the next revision.
If you have run this tool on layer that was active at the time, the RegRedirect value for the peer layer will be left in an incorrect state. If there is nothing important in the writable sublayer, this can easily be fixed with a layer reset. If you do not want to reset the layer, you will need to manually change this value back. You can do this with a registry editor.
Fixed
Version 1.0.2 no longer allow you to try and export active layers.
Not a fan of the command line
For those of you who break into a cold sweat when you read the words "command line" in a tool's instructions, Thunder-man has created a graphical interface for SmallerVSA.
You can get it here http://juice.altiris.com/node/876
as a non-fan of cmd
as a non-fan of cmd - Thx for the GUI.
Thank Thunder-man
The GUI was all Thunder-man
