There are several different ways to update Windows computers. Most people use Windows Updates. That doesn't work well in a corporate environment, especially if you need to make sure that the computers get updated. Another useful way to update your computers is to use Altiris Patch Management. There have been a few great articles on Patch Management lately:

You can also download the updates from Microsoft and install them using Deployment Console. I found a great piece of software that will download updates for you. Here is the link: Windows Updates Downloader.
This software lets you pick what updates are downloaded and where they are saved. Here are some screenshots.
Once you have downloaded the updates, you can integrate them into your Windows XP files.
You can also create a job in Deployment Console. If you create a "Distribute Software" job, it can look like this:

This initiates the Automatic update process, and after about 10 mins, I just choose shoutdown (without logging in) and then it installs all needed updates.
Why Not?
You state that Windows Update does not work well in a corporate environment. Do you mean in instances where each user is supposed to update themselves?
We are using WSUS and it works fine.
WSUS may work fine, but
WSUS may work fine, but when you use Altiris Patch Management you can manage all aspects of your computers from one location (the Notification Server web page). In WSUS you have to wait for all of your computers to report in, then you organize them in groups, and then you have to manage them. If use Patch Management you can use pre-built collections. Patch Management has reduced a lot of hassle for me.
WSUS and Corporate environment
We are using for my corporate environments the Microsoft WSUS. This solution has been configured in a quite complex structure and allows to manage :
- multilanguage OS and applications updates ( 3 different languages)
- patch management centralizated for all different remote sites
- reduce the internet traffic through the schedule downloaded in the night shift
As I see in this interesting post it works very fine when you have to updated manually each computer or are not part of Active Directory domain ( and other examples..).

WUD is useful
Constantly slipsteaming hotfixes is a pain, but I use WUD as a fast way to download patches for OS deployment (if only the patch files were kept more uptodate!)
When I deploy an XP system, its completlely firewalled off (allowing only DS) until i've installed ensured all the latest hotfixes are installed from Deployment Solution using PatchBatch
So this type of product still has its place I think in coorporate environments with a Patch Management Solution active on the network.
