SVSDriveSwitch Juice ReMix
If you've ever found you need to move SVS's Redirect path to a new location then this is the tool for you.
Shortly after I made the first version of SVSDriveSwitch I decided I wanted to make it a GUI based app for several reasons including ease of use and progress reporting. I had originally not intended to make a command line too but decided that this program would be something that System Admins would like and having a GUI program wouldn't work for them easily so I wrote SVSDriveSwitch v2 as the main program was in development. SVSDriveSwitch Juice ReMix isn't intended to replace v2, thus the separate articles, but provide a different experience for a different group of users.
SVSDriveSwitch Juice ReMix works differently than the other versions. It doesn't use Export and Import to move the file locations. It does this via the Windows file system so it's quicker and takes up less space (no VSAs being stored somewhere), but there are some disadvantages to this method that I'll list below.
Requirements
- Windows XP or Vista
- .Net 3.5 (including WPF)
- SVS
- Admin Rights (will request)
Usage
- Enter in the desired new FSLRDR path.
- Decided if you want SVSDriveSwitch Juice ReMix to delete your old FSLRDR location.
- Click start.
- Once the tool is done it will prompt you to reset your PC, but won't do one itself, you won't be able to use SVS until you do.
Features
- Will check to see if the entered path is a valid location.
- Will check the new drive to see if there's enough free space to move your FSLRDR.
- Will deactivate any active layers.
- Will report the progress of copying the files.
- Is cancelable.
Notes and Issues
- There are times on Vista where some files or directories cannot be accessed even with elevated rights. Most of these will be caught while SVSDriveSwitch is counting the FSRLDR drive size prior to copying files but sometimes you'll have read but not write access and error out. In either case, SVSDriveSwitch will stop running and pop-up an error window informing you of the problematic file or directory so you can fix any problems.
- Most of the time these problematic files or folders appear in Adobe directories caused by patches. There are numerous issues with Adobe patches and SVS and this appears to be another one.
- You can reset the layer to overcome this problem or use SVSDriveSwitch v2 (the command line based tool) because it uses WMI, which in turn uses the SVS driver. It can get around this issue but is slower and uses more space.
- This can take quite some time, I moved about 4 gigs in about 20 minutes on average, on a farily decent system. So it's not nearly as slow as v2.
- Please remember to reset afterwards.

Juice ReMix tool line explained
I realize that this version of the tool might not appeal as much as the command line version that was published last week to the average Juice user who's comfortable with the command line and want to use tools on the Juice in a cooperate environment. However, because we give SVS away for free for home use, there are those that are looking for something different.
I created Juice ReMix tool line to do three things:
1) Make some of the more complicated or intimidating SVS tasks easier to use.
2) To reference The Juice to help build the community here (people may have juice tools and not know where they came from).
3) To have professional looking tools that are intuitive.
Chk Button Not active
Jordan,
Thanks for make this very useful tool for home users (like me)and sharing it.
The Check button "Delete Old FSLRDR Direct" is not getting active. I'm not sure, either its selected or not. I feel, the background color is making this illusion. Could you fix this please?
Regards,
Swami.
The check button is working
The check button is working fine for me, in that i can check it or clear it. It might be the colors being used make it hard to see so I'll look at that some.
Your tool made me to think for a unique feature request.
Jordan,
Your tool made me to think for a unique feature request.
Is it possible to move only few applications (Layers) to a different drive, instead of moving all the layers? Why I need this is because, there are some large applications, which I use rarely may be 3 times in a year like video editing software, which probably eating my disc space. Instead, I can have them in an external USB Hard disk.
Hope you agree with me for this feature request :)
PS: Using SUBST command I have created a drive called X: and assigned physically to D:\TEMP. Now I have used your tools to move the Virtual Folders into X: drive. Later Burned them on a DVD & assigned the drive letter as X:
WOW! I have virtual apps running from DVD too. Now my doubt is, will it harm if I remove my DVD disc & put a Movie DVD in the drive ?
Regards,
Swami.
Unfortunately with how SVS
Unfortunately with how SVS currently works, this is not possible. It is a cool idea -- that I've seen requested from others as well. One day it may make it into the product but doing so would require some changes that aren't trivial.
Alternative Drive on SVS Installation
Hi All,
I'm a newcomer to virtualisation...
I was wondering if there is a utility or methodology of specifying, at time of installation, the Drive/Location for the default \fslrdr directory?
Thanks for any help here.
here you go !
Hey,
Check it out this link. It has all the steps you need.
http://juice.altiris.com/tip/3110/svs-installation...
But, use this updated commands from here.
http://juice.altiris.com/tip/3110/svs-installation...
This holds good even for a new installation.
I have personally test this in several machines with 100% success rate.
Hope this helps you out !
Greetings,
Swami.
Thanxsss
Thanxss for this. Now probably the next step should be to submit a bin file for the deployment solution, so that it will be a task inside deployment solution.
I'm already waiting for that one.
