Empowering Juice Contributors

Empowering Juice Contributors
Juicemaster's picture

Wow, it's been a busy 18 months. We launched the Juice in December '05 with a single focus, SVS, and counted about 16,000 page views that first month. This month we launched our 9th section of the Juice (for Intel) and expect to serve up 250,000 page views.

To keep up this pace, we're always looking for better, more efficient ways to get things done. To that end, we're making a few changes to empower our contributors and keep our community dynamic.

The "Edit" Tab

If you check out an article (or tip or download) you submitted, you'll see something new -- an edit tab -- at the top of the page. Clicking this tab will let you make changes without firing-up a word processor, sending an e-mail, or checking in with one of the Juice staffers.

Something to keep in mind before you make a change; after you edit an article, the old version will remain posted until we get a chance to do a quick sanity check. (Remember that "quick" is a relative term. We're less than quick on weekends and at odd hours of the night.)

More HTML Tags

By default, we limit what HTML tags can be submitted via our forms. We do that so those of you with good intentions don't go overboard with big, bold, passion-pink, headlines. To protect us from those with evil intentions, we don't allow tags or scripts that'll do damage to our site.

We have loosened up -- a bit. We've modified our filter to allow all the tags necessary to format 90-percent of the pages on the Juice. (We'd allow the other 10-percent but that would make it hard for us to justify our own existence, wouldn't it?)

Here's a list of tags we now allow:

  • <p>
  • <a>
  • <i>
  • <em>
  • <b>
  • <strong>
  • <br />
  • <blockquote>
  • <pre>
  • <ul>
  • <ol>
  • <li>
  • <dl>
  • <dt>
  • <dd>
  • <h1>
  • <h2>
  • <h3>
  • <table>
  • <tr>
  • <td>
  • <img>
  • <div>

File Uploads

We've modified the download pages (tools and utilities) so their owners can now upload revisions (up to 5MB). This should make getting tool updates out to the community much more efficient.

Image Uploads

You'll notice a new tab on your user profile page labeled "files". Click this tab and you'll see an interface you can use to upload images to include in your tips or articles.

New Style Guide

Since this is a corporate site, there are certain rules we all have to follow to keep things nice and tidy and to "protect the brand." To help you in this quest, we've prepared a style guide complete with code snippets for your copy and pasting pleasure.

To get to this page quickly, just type http://juice.altiris.com/style.

Editing HTML isn't for the faint of heart. Members of our staff are always available to accept your Word or PDF documents if you don't feel comfortable diving into the HTML. But, if you want to fix a typo or submit an updated tool, please do.

Handy information

arjain's picture

This is really a nice information.

Can we have something to star the articles? Some times I feel like bookmarking a page, but I don't want to add in my fav. Better idea is to provide login users with stared articles.

How about editing comments?

Great changes JM... thanks!

More than once I've noticed typos in my comments and would've appreciated an option to edit the same, instead of adding a new one.

Any chance that might get added to your to-do? :)

Thanks!

Editing comments

Rajat,

Editing you're comments was alway's an option.
If you go to one of you're own comments, then you have a third option next to reply and quote.

Comments

Juicemaster's picture

You should be able to edit your own comments until someone responds and extends the thread.

When a comment is responded to, the parent becomes somewhat historical and is locked.

JM

that's what i meant

actually as all comments require approval and don't show up right after submission, usually one notices the topic has an update when a 'new comment' shows in front of it. that happens only when another user has posted a reply and not when your comment is posted after approval (i might be wrong, but i think this is the way it happens). and this is how usually one notices an error in his post after a reply to it is posted.

once responded to and locked, had there been an option to correct some typos, it'd be nice.

Thanks

Do you have some plan to

Do you have some plan to give better access also for mobile browsers?

Sometime I browse on my smartphone but the website is not really optimized for this way.

Thanks

Sounds fun ...

I've received a couple of requests for this functionality (and adding it sounds fun).

I'll look into it.

Thanks for the feedback.

riva11's picture

I found an useful resource to navigate in Juice website from Mobile devices. The Baresite.com is a easy and fast way to browse all websites not prepared for smartphones or similar devices.

This link is the Juice mobile version!

To answer different questions about Baresite, the main advantage about using resource is reduce images in the website to browse , the result is text and graphics in a minimal way, and of course less time and cost browsing through a smartphone.

Thanks for all info

Thanks for all info described in this article and the link to the Juice Style Guide!
