MSI / MSM Unpacker Utility

MSI / MSM Unpacker Utility

The MSI Unpacker utility is a web page program (HTA) for working with MSI and MSM Windows Installer files. It is designed for use by anyone who might want to inspect software before installing it.

Written, distributed, and supported by JSWare, you can get your own copy of this tool here.

Here's a brief description from their site:

The MSI Unpacker returns nearly all of the information stored in an MSI file. So you can use it to inspect software before installing, or use it to create your own, customized install/uninstall packages from the parts of an MSI package that you want. The download includes a sample project that uses the MSI Utility to create an installer for the Microsoft Text-To-Speech runtime - a runtime that is not normally available as a separate install.

This is a very useful program.

I always used commands to be able to do this, but it is difficult.

With this program it is much easier.

Here is a bulleted list of what the application does (if you are like me, lists are great):

  • inspect software before installing
  • use it to create your own customized install/uninstall packages

This software looks really good. I really like the ability to see what the msi is doing before you install the application. This software is also available for Linux.

I agree , this tool is

Today i used the tool for finding a problem in a msi. The application showed some strange behavior with the Citrix installer, and with this tool i solved it in moments of the time i normally needed.

Good job.

Regarding dumps and study materials

HI,
I am planned to do my Altiris packaging certification..
kindly help me friends..

Altiris certification

erikw's picture

As far as i know at this moment there is no certification available for Wise packaging studio and also not for svs packaging.
The best to do is read a guide, and try out you're selve.
Also a altiris given training is very valuable.
In Europe Andre de Meijer (Wise, Altiris employee)is giving very good trainings to get started and to get advanced in Wise packaging studio.
For the states i do not know.

Altiris Certifications Available

Altiris has three tracks available to become an ACE (Altiris Certified Engineer) and the third track involves a Wise Package Studio test.

http://www.altiris.com/Services/Certification.aspx

Click "Track 3" and review their five bullets on how to "Prepare For Exams"

My experience with an earlier version of the test was that this is NOT a software packaging certification, but a Wise Package Studio certification, meaning that they emphasized specific Wise product knowledge over general packaging techniques.

Good Luck!
