Best Practices: Secure Mobility through Manageable Virtualization

Best Practices: Secure Mobility through Manageable Virtualization

Bob Taylor from HP and Brad Winston from Symantec talk about bringing together multiple virtualization technologies -- presentation, application and system-level -- mixing in some streaming and blades for good measure. Find out how combining technologies under a unified management umbrella can reduce costs and increase business agility at the same time, by optimally servicing the needs of different users: from warm-seat knowledge workers, to the mobile workforce and power-hungry technical workers.

SATA ICH9 Drivers: Windows XP Driver Injection Script

SATA ICH9 Drivers: Windows XP Driver Injection Script

I have taken the basis of a Microsoft workaround to take the out-of-the-box shipped XP IDE drivers and inject them into an image format to prevent the well recognized BSOD on boot-up.

HP/Compaq 8510w Deployment Issue

HP/Compaq 8510w Deployment Issue

Our company recently purchased several HP/Compaq 8510w notebooks.

When trying to capture an image from one (we set up to our standards) we received an error when PXE booting into WinPE. The machines boot into WinPE and then present a "Disk not Found" error. These laptops are using SATA hard drives so after some brief searching in the BIOS I Disabled a setting "SATA Native Mode" and retried the image capture.

A Caution About Installation Depots on 64-bit Windows

A Caution About Installation Depots on 64-bit Windows

Just a quick heads-up in case this affects anyone else besides me.

I have a scripted deployment for Windows 2000 servers. It operates doing a PXE boot in DOS mode, copies the install files from the depot and runs the install.

All worked well, until I moved the depot to a 64-bit Windows machine. It turns out, the DOS mode network client doesn't seem to play nicely with 64 bit Windows.

Want to Know What Assets Are Under Warranty?

Want to Know What Assets Are Under Warranty?

I recently received request for a report that would show which of our computers are covered by a warranty. I looked around and didn't see a report off hand (that was not tied to the expiration of the warranty) but I did see a lot of similar reports for expiring leases.

Hopefully my solution to this reporting problem will come in handy for someone else.

Managing and Imaging HP Thin Clients Running XPe

A prerequisite to imaging thin clients is that PXE server needs to be installed and configured. Also the client's BIOS needs to be set as Network Boot as First in the Boot Order in order to be managed by a PXE Server.

Skinny Things Still Need to be Managed

Skinny Things Still Need to be Managed

Ten years ago, Altiris burst onto the systems management stage with a couple dozen employees and a Windows OS management product that helped automate deployment and data and settings migration. At the time we had some unique technology but faced stiff competition from the systems management incumbents.

Traverse the

Traverse the "All Computers" Folder/Group Tree Structure with VBScript

EnumAltirisTree.vbs contains the code for the AltirisTree class. EnumAltirisTree.vbs can be copied and pasted to your own VBScript, or included as a library in your WSF file. You can then easily create an AltirisTree object to enumerate the Altiris DS "Group" tree hierarchy under "All Computers".
