Compaq 6820S Hard Drive Issues

Compaq 6820S Hard Drive Issues
Randall Newnham's picture

Here is a heads-up on Compaq 6820S machines. Apparently, in DOS the hard drives will overheat.

I had a case today where a customer was having ghosting operations fail shortly into the process with the machine shutting down completely. He was able to replicate this on the same model of machine.

Using Windows PE based media may resolve this (please comment if you run across this), but this is essentially a hardware issue with this model of machine.

Thanks,

Randy

Ghost Solution Suite?

Randy,

What does this have to do with Ghost Solution Suite (I see that's how you've categorized your article).

Thx.

The relevance this has for Ghost is that this is a newly-discovered hardware issue that affects imaging and deployment. This issue causes Ghost operations to fail due to hardware overheating, which is why this was categorized as a "Heads up" entry. I hope that is appropriate for this forum.

Thanks for the clarification.

Ah, I see now. Thanks for the clarification.

Confirm?

I have seen this behaviour on other newer laptops and was wondering why this happens and if it a confirmed issue with any manufacturer?

I have been researching, but i haven't found anything. I did see something on Seagate 160GB drives, but I haven't seen anything solid other than a customer reproducing this several times on identical hardware.
