Custom item in NS DB

We use SMS and CMS level 1 for inventorying all hardware and software in our environment and would like to add a custom field to the Inventory of each system to track it's purchase date. I am willing to manually enter the information but am unsure of how to accomplish this.
My goal is to obsolete the current Access Database that we use to track this information in favor of real time info from Altiris inventories.
HELP!

Custom DataType
There is already a purchase order data class that includes a delivery date option. I would suggest using that. You might need to go into your asset type (under view and configuraton, resource settings, resource types, asset types) and choose your asset type. From here you can click add data classes then you'll find the purchase order data class under resource settings, data classes, purchase order data classes, and purchase order details. Otherwise you can create your own custom data class under "user defined" and then add it the same way to the specific asset type.

No purchase Order data class
I can't seem to find this option ... it is part of a solution that does not come bundled with SMS or CMS level 1? I know there is, or was an asset management solution that I believe is part of a level 2 or 3 package we don't own ... or i could just not have something installed that I should, always a possibility.
CMDB solution
I am also on CMS and SMS I and installed the contract managment peice on my dev lab box as I'd like to do costing analysis. I belive the purchasing stuff install with CMDB solution, I could be wrong tho.
