Missing Trial License File

Missing Trial License File

My boss has asked me to evaluate Altiris 2.1 Professional with the streaming server. When I download the trial, the install instructions state that the default path should point at the needed *.lic file and that it should be included in the download.

However, I have extracted all the versions and look through, and I can only find mx4j.license (or something similar to that) buried in Pro Streaming distribution. However, this is a *.license and not a *.lic file so I assume this is not what they are talking about (and installing certain components require a *.lic file ONLY).

Does anyone know where to find the proper file, or do I need to depend on symantic's support to resolve this? (...or did I miss something in the file structure or during the download?)

Thanks for any help you can give!

In my installation i did not had to choose a license file for the install.
On the screen it showed the standard 30 day trial license.

Full clarification of my situation

I think I was unclear - I am having no issues installing the actual SVS 2.1 Pro component to create VSPs and VSAs. My issue is creating with installing the AppStream server and composer components (note: I am NOT using the Notification Server infrastructure) into my virtual computer lab (a host-only VMWare MS Server 2008 - Windows XP lab to test out the streaming capabilities available).

Below is a full description of the steps I have taken and the issue I am encountering. I hope it helps - and I hope someone can help me.

I navigate my web browser to the Aliris SVS Professional web page and select trial. I downloaded all four applications, then realized I wanted to test the 4th download labeled "Software virualization Solution 2.1 SP1 Professional" which has the description of "Download this install to manage Software Virtualization Solution via SVS Professional's streaming system, ..." - I am not attempting to install "Altiris Software Virtualization Solution 2.1 SP1 Integrated Installation" for "Software virtualization Solution form the Altiris Console using the Notifcation Server infrastructure".

After downloading SVS_Pro_Streaming_System_5.2.2.604.005_SP2.zip and extracting it, I navigate to the 5.2.2.604.005_Altiris_FCS_SP2 folder. From this I run Launch.exe and select install components.

For the machine that I create my VSPs (and export them to VSAs), I select Install Streaming Composer. For my test server (which is not a domain controller) in my virtual lab, I select Install Streaming Server. It is at this point I am getting stuck.

For example: After clicking next, agreeing to the license, and choosing my Destination folder when installing the streaming composer, InstallShield Wizard opens up a dialogue with the following message:

"You must specify a license file. If you do not have a license file now, click the Next button to continue with the installation. Once you obtain the license file, place it in the Streaming Composer directory." and offers a text box with a browse button to enter the license file name. The browse button lets you look for the license file, but will only allow a selection of *.lic files - not *.license, *.txt, *.*, or any other naming format.

Canceling out of the browse option brings up a dialog box that states "The installation will continue. However, a license file is required to use this product. Once you obtain the license file, place it in the Altiris Streaming Composer directory to begin using this product." Clicking Next without specifying a license file will bring up the same dialog box.

When installing the single-node streaming server, I can chose *.lic or *.* (all) file formats. However, when at the step for specifying the license file is reached, the next button is grayed out (not clickable) until one is named - thus the streaming server MUST have a proper license file. A dialog warns that an invalid license file will cause the installation not to function and you will need to reinstall. In my case, I specified the file 5.2.2.604.005_Altiris_FCS_SP2\Server\program files\AppStream\awe\common\ch\server\lib\mx4j.license because it was the only license file I could find, but that obviously was not correct. I reset my Server VMWare image after two hours of watching the postgre database schema initializing.

According to the ATWE-Administrator's_Guide.pdf included in the extracted folder, page 29 under pre-requisites for Installation states that "2. Keep the Streaming System License file (*.lic) supplied by your technical contact, in a known location." while page 31 under Installing a Single-Node Configuration states "6. By default, the License File Selection window, displays the location of the trial licence, that comes with the system. If you have bought a license, then click Select to locate the license file (*.lic) Click Next. NOTE: The installation program does not check for the validity of your license. If you use an invalid license, the Streaming Server is disabled when you open the Console." However, there is no demo license file at the location to which it points. The only license file I found was the one mentioned in the above paragraph (mx4j.license).

I knew it was simple...

Just an update in case anyone else hits this before it is fixed...

I downloaded by going to www.symantec.com -> products -> Altiris SVS 2.1 Pro -> trialware instead of going to www.altiris.com -> download -> software virtualization solution 2.1 (Professional). Unfortunately, symantec forgot to put the demo licenses on their download page!

Got it resolved at 12:00pm CST on July 16th, 2008. Hopefully they'll fix this page soon.

Thank you for posting that

Thank you for posting that solution. I was unable to start testing as well since I couldn't find the license file.
