Deploy Ghost image with SVS layers?
Submitted by jstwolf on 1 May, 2008 - 12:44.
I just recently started looking into virtualizing applications. I am wondering if I can add the layers to a hard drive, and then clone the hard drive multiple times? This would save a lot of time by avoiding pushing the layers to each hard drive individually. My question is, will the application layers still work? Is there an individual identifier, such as a SID, in the layer that would cause conflicts if used in this manner?

There is a SID however it
There is a SID however it shouldn't cause problems unless you had custom user settings that would need to be identified by a SID in the layers.
We use diskimages with SVS layers on them internally so there's no problem with doing what you want with Ghost as long as you take the SID issue into account.
Same for me
I agree with Jordan. We also use a image with al layers inside.
There is absolutely no problem with the SID. The only thing the SID needs is to unique at that single pc.

Layers in Images - Streaming, Too!
This is well tested and supported. In fact, SVS ships with Altiris Deployment Solution (our "other" imaging product).
In the case of SVS Pro, you can even pre-populate the streaming cache in an image. Then, when a machine comes up, the Streaming Agent will automatically associate the app in the local cache with the corresponding application object (and all of its provisioning and licensing policies) back in the Streaming Server's database!

Thanks for the feedback. I will be implementing this in the near future.
