Windows XP 64 bit support

Windows XP 64 bit support

I looked around the forum, and couldn't find anywhere where people were talking about Windows XP 64 bit support. We have an entire department (200+) that are slowly moving to XP 64, and it will be a pain to package apps, or install all their apps by hand, while SVS has been a life saver so far on a 32bit platform.

Is there any word if SVS will be supporting 64bit Operating Systems? I always hear sometime soon, but sometime soon never gets any closer :(

Anyone else have comments? :)

There's no official 64-bit

Jordan's picture

There's no official 64-bit SVS available at this time.

We are planning 64-bit support with SVS 3.0, but there's no release date or guarantee that it will ship with 3.0's initial release.

No 64Bit yet

There is no official 64 bit version of SVS. Because of the lack on 64bit applications the demands are not high yet.
We developed a 64 bit version, and that needs to be legalized. There is a lot work going on, but it still takes months rather than weeks to get it officialy supported.

no NS 64 bit agent

jjesse's picture

The NS agent, while it will install, is only a 32-bit agent and the last I heard the NS7 agent will only be a 32-bit agent as well.. This means the agent will only report on information and programs that installed in the 32-bit address space.

No 64 bit

erikw's picture

In Las Vegas we had a discussion about 64 bit.
At this moment there are no real questions about 64 bit. There should just be more 64 bit applikation.
SVS on 64 bit is already tested, and works fine. It will give information to the NS about the 32 bit applikations.

I can not test this with 64 bit, because the only 64 bit software i have in a virtualised environment is Office 2007 64Bit.

Can we get a BETA legally?

"64 bit is already tested and works fine". That really stinks. That's like saying to a kid, "There's cookies in the cookie jar, but you can't have them." I'd feel better if you said there were tons of problems and 64-bit just wasn't ready!!!!

How about opening a BETA testers program or something? Can you get by the legal junk that way?

Thanks.

I would beta test it!

64bit support

64bit support has some small issues. It takes some time to create a valid driver certificate. The current version is showing test version in the background because it is build with a private certificate.
As soon as possible i will open the cookie jar, and give all of you a piece.
Should be nice as a session on Manage fusion the Hague and Orlando.
A view inside the cookie jar for 64bit.

So I have to ask. Why do

Jordan's picture

So I have to ask. Why do you all want 64-bit versions of SVS? You can't run SVS as a service so why place it on a server? I can't think of a use in a business environment where there would be a lot of machines affected, no one has that many 64-bit client machines except for maybe 3D Animation and the Video Game industries.

Is this all for personal/Homes use?

64bit think about TS

erikw's picture

Jordan,

i run the 64bit version on 64bit TS.
Especially in windows 2008 TS it is a coll feature for virtualising and publishing apps.
Lot's of people do want it for that.
And Vista 64 bit. It supports over 4GB of memory, and machines are very, very fast.
Yes for personal use.
But more and more customers want it.

Use of 64 Bit

Hello

we use SVS on XP Prof in a great environment of car builder . In the future the operationg system of new Workstation will be XP Prof. 64Bit. So we would like to use SVS 64 Bit like SVS 32 Bit which make our administrator lifes so much easier.

Andy

I want 64Bit

ThomasVogel's picture

I am a software developer and use many different versions of the software we develop on one PC. There is no better and faster way to install and test and get rid of our nightly builds and then deactivate the layers for later comparison with newer builds.

As I now use a 64BIT OSs on my development machine, I would appreciate a 64Bit SVS version.
Otherwise I have to keep my older and slower machine up and running...

SVS 64 good

spazzzen's picture

Right now the company I work for uses SVS on every 32 bit pc but we also have quite a few computers that we build to xp 64. So the problem is, we have to make sure we push the correct installs for each os bit. So when we deploy a new computer we have to say "push vsas for 32 and run msis for 64". It would be great to just be able to run the 32 bit vsas on both systems as all the applications we have in vsa's are 32 bit only anyways. Eventaully it would be nice to also beable to put 64 bit apps into a vsa because they are so much easier to install and fix.

x64 for CAD plus...

I have about 100 x64 Vista machines running SolidEdge and ACAD. We use x64 to go beyond the 4GB memory barrier of x32. Additionally, I'm constantly configuring, testing, and tweaking dozens of software apps and being able to use SVS on an x64 Vista machine would save me lots of Acronis re-imaging like I'm doing now. Installing and uninstalling apps tends to clutter up a machine, but using SVS layers is a much cleaner approach.

I'd use x64 Vists SVS quite a bit.

Thank you.

x64 support, please

I use SVS personally at home and am very pleased with the extra responsiveness obtained since I don't have loads of apps loading at startup and can just activate the layers I need when performing certain tasks.

The XP x64 machine and Vista x86 machine I'm using both have 4GB of RAM and I'm only holding off on changing to Vista x64 on both because I can't run SVS on them. I too would love to be able to beta test and x64 version of SVS, or better yet, a released version. I've been waiting patiently for 64bit and the Lightning version that is supposed to be a lot faster... and if you really want to make my Christmas, can I have SVS that will run from a USB key?

Binky

64 bit support

I'll agree on the strong desire to have a 64-bit version of SVS. The main reason I'm using a 64-bit OS is to support the 4GB of RAM in my machine. I probably wouldn't have made the move so quickly if I realized SVS wouldn't work.

What is the official Symantec stance on when (if) a 64-bit version will be available?

Rumors

spazzzen's picture

At Manage Fusion Fall 08 I heard a few things. Our company is getting an increasing number of x64 PCs and being able to use the same deployment process we use on x86 would be very nice (deploying vsas). Again these are rumors as they can not give a definite answer as of yet. The one most of the instructors gave me was the next release of SVS, which would be SVS 3.0. But I also heard there was a chance that 64 bit support may not yet be supported in that version. If that is the case, I was told that in SVS 4 would definitly have 64 bit support. If I rememeber correctly, both versions are set to release next year. So cross your fingers.

The need for 64-bit

We have been holding off a company wide implementation of SVS (still only testing in a small internal group) basically because we use Citrix. We recently migrated to the 64-bit platforms on the server side to take advantage of better scaling for users on the hardware.
So while we have the need for the 64-bit platform on the server side we also have the need for multi-user (TS and Citrix); which I saw an update on in another thread.
While I realize the number of 64-bit apps is low, the business needs for 64-bit are apparently very relevant (based upon other comments here).

Thanks,
Rob
