Windows Firewall

Windows Firewall

I am looking for anyone that is currently using a solution for managing the Windows Firewall. I would like to know how you manage it and a direction to get that information. We are looking to manage remote firewalls and be able to make changes. Any help or direction will be appreciated.
If there is another firewall used and is manageable, please post that info.

Use the netsh command

You can configure the windows firewall in a script using the netsh command.

You can view the usage information by running:
netsh firewall ?

and more info on how to use it can be found here - it's aimed more at 2008 and Vista, but the same command syntax will/should apply to XP and 2003.

GBROMAGE,
Thank you for the response. I have seen this. We were looking to see if there is software out there to centrally manages the configurations.

AD GPO?

Have you looked into the native Windows Firewall management through Active Directory Group Policy?

Doing it centrally...

My "central" way is to use an Altiris Deployment Server script out to clients. The script is a batch file based around netsh. :-)

No, I havent. I will look into that more. Just trying to get a feel on what other people were using.

Endpoint Security Solution

Because of PCI requirements we had to install ESS on all of our notebook systems just for the firewall. It does give you the ability to do some firewall management. Bad news this is end of live with Altiris. It is being replaced by Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 (known as SEP 11). You might look into it.
