SVS 2.1

One nice feature that I see with version 2.1 is that when you deactivate the layer it automatically closes the application rather than shooting an error as it does in 2.0

A question about user mobility using SVS

Good morning,

I need a software which would let me bring my Windows applications and settings with me, when I change PC, without the need to reinstall everything, or use complex backup and restore solutions (like Norton Ghost).

For this purpose, there already exists hardware virtualization products (VMware Player/Workstation, or Moka5, which is essentially VMware Player with a nice frontend, and the ability to 'stream' VMs), and also software virtualization products (MojoPac).

My question is, is SVS better than them? If yes, what are its pros, and its cons? Does it require Administrator privileges on the client's machines?

Thanks a lot

SVS On The Go

SVS has a lot of potential in the mobile space. And you'll see features coming out over the next couple releases that begin to make that possible.

[We had expected SVS 2.1 to include more enhancements along these lines, like the "Subscribe" feature where a client could just "see" and immediately use a layer already extracted on either a network share or removable media. But that and Vista support both turned out to be complex and time consuming, and we opted to complete the Vista support (since that's more relevant to our primary target market, the corporate desktop).]

SVS has certain advantages over some of the approaches being used out there today for portable workspace. In most cases, tho, SVS would be supplementary, not a replacement. For example, solutions like vThere and Kidaro would be more flexible and more compelling to business customers if they could reconfigure the virtual workspace on the fly with application virtualization. Same for any solution that is VM-based.

SVS doesn't require admin rights to use, but it does require admin rights to install the filter driver. In a VM, that's not a problem, but for mobile solutions that use the client's OS as the execution environment (the U3-type solutions), that is a barrier to many use cases. Those guys stay 100% in user space so that you can use any PC, even a business center machine in Guest mode.

64 Bit Support

When will SVS support the 64 bit platforms?

RE: 64 Bit Support

If I recall correct from a post at the Altiris Forum, Vista 64-bit will be supported in Lightning (release date unknown).
Have in mind that Altiris will not announce any release dates in public.

Re: Can't Install

Raffee,

You can manually download a license key here: http://www.altiris.com/Download/svsPersonal.aspx

When I go there and click

When I go there and click on accept, I get the yourfile.aspx that I mentioned in my previous post. It says you are supposed to get a zip file with the license in it, but that is not what happens for me. I have tried it at least 5 different times.

Well, I decided to try with

Well, I decided to try with IE, instead of Firefox . . . and it worked! I now have the zip file and the license. I don't recall not being able to dl a file using Firefox, but anyway, I have now it. Thanks for re-pointing me to the link.

Still having problem ?

If you still having problem, then visit the below link

Here, I have given a work around for the installation, if you are getting error message during installation. Just follow the DOS commands, which I have given in between the dotted lines.

Registry entries

I have been using SVS for a couple of months now and love it ! I often like to check out new shareware and this gives me a way to play without having to reinstall my OS every couple of months.

My question- After installing and deactivating programs in SVS, I always get residual registery entries (is this normal ?) SVS program was installed after security programs and registry cleaning programs does this make a difference ? Also, some programs i install in SVS intialize fine the first time but after I deactivate and clean regestry then later activate program again it will not initialize. Other than that, this program is wonderful. I was wondering if like the apple product will this one day allow for an alternate OS to be installed in a virtual layer ?

I get a similar response while installing to Vista. Event viewer shows the following, which is puzzling and I can't find the application on my system:

Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Altiris Software Virtualization Agent. Product Version: 2.1.2084. Product Language: 1033. Installation success or error status: 1603.

Product version is easy, It is the version number.
Language is also clear. 1033 stands for English, 1043 for Dutch.

Installation code 1603 stands for No rights.
The easiest thing to solve this is to extract the download, go to the MSI, Right mouse and start as administrator.

You will see that it will work, and you can use it.

Run as administrator

I ran into the same 1603 error. Since I am pretty new to Vista I had to look how to have the mis run as administrator. I have the Home Premium. There are probably mre was to do this, but since I did not have the right click and run as options I did the following:
Opened the cmd windows (All Programs, Acessories) as administrator,
browsed to the path where I unpacked the install and the msi file is located,
Typed msiexec.exe /i Software_Virtualization_Agent.msi
Now my install did not halt anymore.
Hope this helps

I tried to download it but

I tried to download it but I don't know why I can't unzip it! I found another installation kit on optimizare website and I have the same problem.

One suggested "fix" or "change"

I've noticed that when I go to update a layer the list is in a small window and in seemingly no particular order, and worse yet without scrollbars or even arrow-down movement capability.

It would be nice to see some sort of logical order (perhaps alphabetical order like the Admin panel) to the list for you to choose from, and some scroll bars would be wonderful for those of us with more layers than that tiny window can list all at once.

It's a real pain having to hit the first letter of the layer name repeatedly until it happens to jump to the right layer name.

Can't install personal version

I tried to register SVS Personal Version. When I go to http://www.altiris.com/Download/svsPersonal.aspx and click on Accept, then comes the identical site without a download-link or a file. This happens in IE and in Firefox. What can I do?

Popup Blocker?

Hi HeinzP,

Sorry you're having problems.

We just did a couple tests on that page and saw the behavior you're describing when our Internet security package tried to block the download pop-up.

Are you seeing anything that indicates a pop-up is being blocked?

JM

Popup Blocker

Hi,

I have disabled the Popup Blocker, but no download. There's nothing that indicates a popup is being blocked.

HeinzP

ASP Blocked

We get a report like this every few months. Since no one here has been able to repro the problem, we don't know the cause. But you'll notice the EULA acceptance page is an Active Server Page (ASP, with the .aspx extension). Clicking "Accept" is supposed to take you to another ASP titled "Altiris® Software Virtualization Solution™ (SVS™) Resources" that also kicks off the download dialog for the .zip file containing your license key.

Our Web guys are at a loss. My theory is that some setting in Windows Internet Options > Security is causing the creation of that second ASP to fail. Not sure what the "magic setting" is. Maybe some Web gurus here have a suggestion. If I set Internet Security to "High" in Windows, I get "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded," but I do get the second .aspx page displayed. So if it is a security setting, it's some option that must have been explicitly configured.

Such are the hazards of using Microsoft products that refuse to comply with HTML standards!! If you figure it out, please let me know so I can get with our Web team to resolve!

Firewall may cause problems

Hi.

I had this problem recently and turning off firewall helped (I'm using Kerio PF).
Just enter the web page, turn off firewall, click 'Accept', download ZIP, turn on firewall again. I'm not sure what exactly is being blocked but I've tested this with Opera, Mozilla, IE and following this way works :)

Cheers!
